The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) currently uses an indicative daily exchange rate system plus transactions in the formal banking system to calculate exchange rates for various currencies.
“The ‘Indicative Daily Exchange Rate’ reflects the weighted average exchange rate calculated from FX transactions conducted by banks in the previous day,” the apex bank said.
Today, the NBE exchange rate for the US Dollar to Ethiopian Birr is 122.1943 ETB for buying and 124.176 ETB for selling.
The Kenyan Shelling exchange rate on the NBE is 0.9417 ETB per Ksh for buying and 0.9682 ETB per KSh for selling.
The Canadian Dollars exchange rate on the NBE today is 87.5255 ETB per CAD for buying and 88.4007 ETB per CAD for selling.

Note: this currency exchange rate is meant to be only a reference exchange rate, but is not a mandatory transaction exchange rate. The rates also reflect ongoing efforts by the NBE to stabilize the foreign exchange market following recent macroeconomic reforms.
The NBE also conducts special foreign exchange auctions to manage currency supply and reduce disparities between official and parallel market rates. For example, a recent auction saw a weighted average rate of around 107.9 ETB per USD.
Furthermore, the Ethiopian NBE also has a policy on foreign exchange trading spreads and fees. This policy includes:
- Separately identifying the foreign exchange trading spread in the bank’s daily posted rates and transactions.
- Separately disclosing, reporting, and charging FX-related fees and commissions to bank clients.
- Making due reference to international best practices when setting fees.
- Transparently disclosing all fees, commissions, or other related charges in transactions with customers.
- Reporting all fees to the NBE on a regular basis
